Hollywood is back in the business of free-form thrillers after a decade of decline, according to research by The Wall Street Journal.
The number of titles that can be downloaded for free each month has surged, from 1,818 in December 2013 to 4,879 in December 2016, according a new study by The Journal.
That means that for every title released last year, more than 60 titles can be viewed for free, according the research.
That trend is unlikely to last.
Many studios have begun to push out movies for free and some of them have already begun offering paid versions, including HBO’s Game of Thrones and Amazon’s Prime Video, which are both available for free.
Some studios, including Netflix and Hulu, have made their content available for purchase on other services, such as YouTube.
The Wall Street report also found that the number of movies released each month is growing again, though it doesn’t include those released this year.
